Craig Callaway is recognized and respected as one of the best get-out-the-vote organizers in America. In 2000, Callaway organized the petition drive and referendum that ended non-partisan local government in Atlantic City that year. It also forced Mayor Jim Whelan, a Democrat with the support of Republican party leaders, to face re-election nearly two years before the end of his term under the non-partisan system. In  2001, Callaway then ran the get-out-the-vote drive in both the primary and general elections to elect Democrat Lorenzo Langford as Atlantic City mayor.

In that same year, Callaway ran for office himself, and was elected Ward Councilman from the Third Ward of Atlantic City.

In 2004, Craig Callaway received national recognition when he applied his vote turnout techniques for John Kerry during the Bush-Kerry Presidential Election.

In 2013, Craig Callaway helped unseat Democratic Lorenzo Langford, and elect Republican Don Guardian as mayor in Atlantic City, a town with an overwhelming majority of Democratic voters.

In 2020, Callaway helped Amy Kennedy,  when she was a candidate for the Democratic Party nomination for the House of Representatives in South Jersey. She was backed by national Democrats including the Phil Murphy faction of the NJ Democratic Party in North Jersey. She had originally planned to run against incumbent Congressman Jeff Van Drew, a fellow Democrat, in the Democratic Party Primary Election in June, 2020. National Democratic Party leaders were angry at Van Drew for failing to vote to impeach Republican President Donald Trump during the previous year.

At that time, George Norcross and Steve Sweeney Democrats in South Jersey supported Brigid Callahan Harrison.  Amy Kennedy defeated Callahan Harrison in the Democratic Primary Election in June.  However, when Kennedy did not hire Callaway for the November election, Callaway worked for Jeff Van Drew who had just switched to the Republican Party that January. Van Drew won re-election as a Republican in November of 2020.

Last November, Callaway helped Republican “Tokyo” Joe O’Donoghue upset incumbent Democrat Eric Scheffler to win election as Atlantic County Sheriff.  Callaway also helped Republican Jesse Kurtz win a landslide re-election to City Council in the mostly Democrat 6th Ward of Atlantic City.

Craig Callaway was born in 1959 in Atlantic City as one of 9 children.  He is married to Ramona. Together they have 8 children, 18 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Craig’s father was a construction laborer for Local 472. His mother was a clerk for the Atlantic County Superintendent of Elections.

Craig Callaway graduated Atlantic City High School in 1978, and then attended Fairleigh-Dickenson University for two years.  During the early 1980s, Callaway worked as a PBX Operator and hotel clerk for the Resorts International and Harrah’s casinos.  Then he worked in the mercantile office of Atlantic City government for the next 23 years.  Callaway quickly earned a reputation for being fair and helpful to the merchants, bus, taxi, and parking lot owners and operators he worked with.

Many of them were recent immigrants from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and other Asian countries. They were used to being abused, bullied, and shaken down for bribes by government officials both in America and their native countries. They were pleasantly surprised when Craig Callaway was helpful and sympathetic in bringing them in compliance with state and local laws.  Over the years, many of them developed a rapport with Craig Callaway and began helping each other politically.

When he first got involved in politics, Craig Callaway applied his skills and methods to elect only candidates affiliated with the Democratic Party.  However, during the past twenty years, Callaway has chosen to support candidates who he believes best represent his views and interests regardless of party.

Craig Callaway believes that President Trump lost close elections in the swing states of Arizona, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin in 2020.  Callaway does not believe that Democrats “rigged” those 2020 elections to defeat Trump. However, Callaway does say that universal mail-in ballots increased the voting power of candidates who used his methods of get-out-the-vote, and that Democrats were much better at using those methods than Republicans in 2020.
