Last week, Craig Callaway pled guilty to vote fraud in Federal Court in Camden. He admitted in open court that he procured, cast and tabulated “fraudulent” mail-in ballots during the 2022 general election. However, there was no credible evidence that Callaway had done that.
During the 2022 general election, Craig Callaway was hired by Republican Congressman Jeff Van Drew to get votes for him. Callaway did an impressive job.
Callaway trained and paid hundreds of workers to walk door-to-door and talk to mostly Democratic voters in Atlantic City, Pleasantville, and Egg Harbor City. Their pitch was that the Democratic Party had failed them and that Republican Congressman Jeff Van Drew was a better choice.
Until 30 years ago, campaign workers knocked on doors and drove their supporters to the polls on Election Day. Twenty-five years ago, left-wing Democrats and clueless Republicans completely changed our way of voting. We no longer have in-person voting on one Election Day. Instead, any voter can choose to vote by mail or through a messenger.
Most campaigns today try to get their supporters to apply for and receive mail-in ballots days and weeks before the election.
Craig Callaway’s workers received and delivered roughly 1,600 applications and mail-in ballots during the weeks before the 2022 elections. During that time, they were all under intensive surveillance by the U.S. Department of Justice and seven federal, state and local law enforcement agencies. Investigators questioned dozens of the messengers and hundreds of voters.
Four of those voters denied filling out applications or voting with mail-in ballots. It would have been very easy for investigators to prove or disprove fraud. They could have examined those four ballots and applications and checked the signatures.
However, this was never done. The ballots were allowed to be opened and counted. There was no request to inspect the applications or the signature flaps of the envelopes before or after the election. They were therefore destroyed according to standard procedures about two months later. Federal agents did not charge and arrest Callaway until 14 months after this vital evidence was gone. Why?
Most voters don’t care. They think Craig Callaway is a crook who deserves to go to jail for something. That is because Callaway was convicted of taking bribes when he was on City Council in 2005. He was one of 130 public officials set-up and prosecuted when Chris Christie used his position as U.S. Attorney to jump-start his political career.
Everyone knows there are so many complicated and intrusive laws that it is almost impossible to run a business or build anything without getting some favor from some politician. Politicians collect campaign funds and win votes by doing favors and helping people.
Professor John J. Wallis of the University of Maryland published extensive research on this “systemic corruption” for many years. Click Here For Link To Previous Post: State Constitutions Saved America After 1837. Until “Progressives” Ruined Them In 1960s. – Liberty and Prosperity
Some politicians like Nancy Pelosi, Elizabeth Warren, George Norcross, and Frank LoBiondo get rich from politics. They are never prosecuted. They are careful not to promise specific favors. They often use the magic word “access” instead.
These successful politicians never take money directly from people they help. However, they somehow richly rewarded in other ways.
Other politicians, are prosecuted and go to jail for being less careful. Many of them were good and honest people who thought they were doing the right thing. Craig Callaway is broke. He could not afford a lawyer and had a public defender.
I had personal experience with this when I was on City Council in Atlantic City. Law enforcement had set up our mayor and three council members for taking money after doing favors for people. However, all of them were black. The attorney general would not let any of them be prosecuted unless a white councilman was also charged.
That is why I, Jim Whelan, Jim Sykes and Arnold Orsatti all became targets of political corruption investigators. They were very persuasive. They invited each of us to lunch or for drinks after work one by one. They gave each of us a very personal hardship story and asked for help The offered each of us campaign donations. Everything we said was being recorded in an unmarked van parked outside. Fortunately, I was too disorganized to set up a campaign fund for my next election. So I didn’t take the donation. Arnold Orsatti was not as lucky.
There is a very good movie called American Hustle starring Christian Bale. Much of it is fiction. But the part about setting up and destroying Angelo Erichetti, the mayor of Camden is absolutely true. Erichetti was no crook. He was a great man who devoted his life to helping people.
