Does Atlantic County Spend $700 Per Day To House Each Dangerous Juvenile?

At a routine Republican Club meeting in Atlantic County, a Republican County Commissioner (formerly Freeholder) casually talked about several county government issues. He mentioned that Atlantic County  has one juvenile detention center in Egg Harbor City called “Harborfields”.  He said it only holds 20 inmates.  However, there is a pandemic of juvenile crime in Atlantic County. Our prosecutor has detained far mor than 20 juveniles.  Because we don’t have room for all the juveniles we have locked up, we have to house them in other counties.

Those other counties are charging Atlantic County $600 to $700 per day!  That comes to $219,000 to $255,500 per year!  In addition our local public schools also have to hire special tutors to give each one a special, in-person education!

Two years ago, Spotlight posted an article that said most New Jersey counties are spending $608,095 per year on each juvenile inmate, or $1,666 per day!

Can Atlantic County expand Harborfields in Egg Harbor City to accommodate more juveniles for much less than $255,500 per year? Can it add juvenile rooms to our County Jail for adults in Mays Landing for less than that?

Is our “woke” Democrat Governor Phil Murphy forcing to spend much more than needed on juvenile inmates? Is Murphy doing this to force counties to release dangerous juveniles back into the community with useless “ankle bracelet” programs?

We are in the middle of an election. Why isn’t this a campaign issue? Why aren’t Republicans or Democrats talking about this?
