NJEA is a labor union that almost every teacher and other public-school employee is forced to join or pay dues to. It currently has roughly 200,000 members who each pay union dues of roughly $500 to 1,000 per year. That gives it roughly $155 million to spend EACH YEAR.
Roughly $4 million is spent each year on salaries and benefits for 13 “executive” employees. Sean Spiller has been President of the NJEA since 2021. Last year, he was paid a salary of $370,000 plus various benefits worth $69,569.

NJEA is by far the most powerful political organization in America. Its executives spend roughly 2/3 of their time persuading, bullying or electing politicians. NJEA bankrolls political campaigns through two “Political Action Committees” (PACs). They are Garden State Forward and NJEA PAC. Between 2013 and 2022, NJEA’s two PACS gave a total of $73.5 million to political campaigns or an average of $7.35 million per year. Garden State Forward gave $64.6 million ($6.46 million per year) while its NJEA PAC gave $8.9 million ($890,000 per year). Roughly 99% of that money went to Democratic Party candidates and committees.

Last November 13, NJEA President Sean Spiller announced that he was seeking the Democratic Party nomination to run for NJ Governor next year. Since then, the NJEA has been using its Facebook Page, its newsletters and all of its resources to elect Spiller.
When he announced, Sean Spiller issued this statement, which he later mailed to all registered Democrats in New Jersey:
“I know that so many people are worried about what another Trump administration may bring. But I’m running for Governor with resolve. . . We will stand up to protect the freedoms of all New Jersey residents, immigrants, those seeking reproductive health care, our students who deserve a country that supports their education, not an attempt to eliminate it, our LGBTQIA community, and anyone feeling targeted by the hateful rhetoric that dominated his campaign.
“I’m an educator, a union leader and a Black man in America. In short, I’m everything that Donald Trump hates, and everything he wants to exclude from the promise of America. . . I’m prepared to defend us against what Trump may try to force upon us.
“I’m ready to step up. . . defending our number one in the nation public schools from a loss of public dollars and outside censorship. . . funding Planned Parenthood and protecting access to reproductive health care and allowing law enforcement to protect and serve, not to become part of a costly Trump immigration agenda.
“We will continue to welcome all who come to New Jersey and support them to become part of our communities and our economy. . . ”
