Above Image: Philadelphia TV Channel 6 Action News, WPVI, an ABC News included the above photos of the 40 year old Black Man arrested for the July 4 shootings in the Kinsessing section Philadelphia. The conservative New York Post also reported his race. However, the Philadelphia Inquirer and national media did not show photos of the alleged killer nor did they mention his race.
Below Images: All five of the young men killed were Black, as were the two others who were injured. Their photos were included in the local Philadelphia TV news coverage by NBC10 and TV 6 Action News. However, those photos and mention of the race of the victims were not reported by national mainstream TV, print, or online media.
Above Image: The New York Post reported that neighbors were stunned to learn that the killer was the man they knew only as “Kim”. They said he had never caused problems during the ten years he lived in the neighborhood. They said they never thought he was capable of violence. One neighbor described Kim as going out “undercover” when he dressed as a women. “He was weird, but he was a nice guy”. Another neighbor speculated, “Something made his rubber band pop”.
The killer, Kim Carriker had an active a Facebook page for years. He regularly posted his support for Black Lives Matter. In July 2020, he supported workers who protested in the Strike for Black Lives in Philadelphia.
When a reporter asked his grandmother why Carriker would target young Black men for death if he supported Black Lives Matter, she responded, “Well, that’s a question that all black people should be asking”.

This mainstream media reporting of this event is part of a familiar pattern. When a Black person is the victim of a crime or claims to be insulted or treated unfairly by someone who is White, it is often reported as headline national news by mainstream networks and online news sites. Photos of the alleged offender and victim are posted side by side, and the races of each are included in the headline.

This selective news coverage is a classic propaganda technique designed to distort the perception of reality. If race is shown or reported only in stories reporting alleged crimes or misconduct by Whites against Blacks, but not in stories of similar crimes or misconduct by Blacks against Whites or against other Blacks, people watching or reading those reports will falsely blame only Whites for such crimes or alleged misconduct.
