Above Image: Bust of Richard Stockton. Stockton Was A New Jersey Signer of the Declaration of Independence And Early Supporter of Equal Rights for Black Americans. Stockton University Was Named For Him When It Was Founded In 1971. This Statue Was Removed From Public Display In 2017 When “Woke” Faculty Members Lied About Him To The Student Senate.
Stockton University is a four year college with campuses in Atlantic City and one of its suburbs. It was established by New Jersey state government in 1971. It has been controlled and funded by the state ever since. It is named after Richard Stockton, a genuine New Jersey hero.
Richard Stockton was one of the 56 men who signed our Declaration of Independence in 1776. That document declared that we are all created equal and endowed by our Creator with certain “unalienable rights” including “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”. In many speeches, including his remarks at Independence Hall in Philadelphia in 1861, and at Gettysburg in 1863, Abraham Lincoln said our nation was “conceived in liberty” with the “sentiments” of that Declaration of Independence. In his Second Inaugural Address, Lincoln said the Civil War and its four years of death and destruction were God’s just punishment of Americans for allowing slavery to continue.
In signing the Declaration of Independence in July of 1776, Richard Stockton and each of the others pledged their “lives”, “fortunes”, and “sacred honor” when they signed that Declaration. Like many of them, Richard Stockton soon lost his fortune, freedom, and life. Richard Stockton was a successful lawyer from a wealthy family when he represented New Jersey in the Continental Congress in Philadelphia in 1776. After signing the Declaration of Independence in July, Richard Stockton spent four months in New York and New England to inspect and assist local militias on behalf of the Continental Congress. On his way home, he was betrayed and captured by the British. Stockton was held in a prison ship in New York Harbor in cold weather under “harsh treatment and meager rations”. When he was near death, George Washington, the Continental Congress, and his family all arranged for his release. As part of the deal, Stockton pledged loyalty to Britain. However, Richard Stockton never regained his health and he was sick until he died several years later.
Richard Stockton and his family were also leaders in America’s fight to end slavery and recognize equal rights for Black Americans. Throughout his adult life, he and his entire family saved Blacks from slavery the way Oskar Schindler saved Jews from the Holocaust.
Richard Stockton and his family, like most Quakers in NJ and Pennsylvania, did not own slaves or tolerate anyone who did. Like Oskar Schindler, they bought Black slaves only to protect them, prepare them for freedom, and then free them when they were educated, trained, and self-sufficient. One of their “slaves”, Marcus Marsh, became a medical pioneer who worked with Dr. Benjamin Rush, America’s leading medical doctor. Dr. Rush was a close friend of the Stockton family and also a fierce opponent of slavery.
Richard Stockton’s grandson, Robert Stockton became even more famous in the worldwide fight against slavery. In 1821, at age 26, Robert Stockton commanded U.S. Navy ships that captured slave trading ships, freed their slaves, and bought land for them to live safely in Liberia, a newly established independent country in Africa.
Later, during the 1846 War with Mexico, Robert Stockton took forceful action to make sure that slavery would never be permitted in the new state of California. The city of Stockton, California is named after him.
However, on April 4, unknown faculty members of Stockton University calling themselves “The Faculty Senate Task Force” sent this message to all students and faculty members of Stockton:
“The Stockton 50 Years and Beyond Task Force is charged with determining whether a location-based name ‘consistent with our founders’ original intentions should be pursued’. Stockton was named for Richard Stockton, a resident of Princeton, NJ and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. However, his history includes enslaving people and later in 1776, he signed an oath of loyalty to the King of England, which was considered an act of treason by many. Considering this information and in concert with Stockton’s 2020 resolution, titled “Commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice at Stockton”, we would like your feedback on this issue.

I talked about this on the Dan Klein radio program on 1400AM, WOND Radio in Atlantic City on April 4. One day later, Harry Hurley and Dan Alexander reported this on the WPG 95.5 FM News Radio and wpgtalkradio.com website.
Today, Friday, April 7, Harvey Kesselman, the President of Stockton University publicly announced on the Harry Hurley radio program on WPG 95.5 FM News Radio that Stockton University will NOT change its name.

However, that announcement does not solve the problem.
- We still need to know the names of the faculty members who wrote the email that blatantly lied about Richard Stockton to 8,000 students and hundreds of faculty members and staff. What classes do they teach? What other lies did they teach? Who did they teach them to?
- We still need to know that if Stockton University did not intend to change its name, who was responsible for sending that email.
- We still need to know if Stockton University President Harvey Kesselman knew the email had been sent out before we and WPG Radio made it public. Did he approve it? If so, why?
- We still need to know how far along Stockton has gone so far to change its name. Which “location based” names consistent with “Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice” have been proposed?
- We still need to make sure Stockton retracts the lies it emailed to its 8,000 students. We need to make sure Stockton teaches its students the truth.
- We also need to know if Stockton students were told the truth about Richard Stockton in 2017 when its Student Senate voted to remove the statute of Richard Stockton from public view.
History is important. We see how easy the TV news and daily newspapers distort and manipulate the news by reporting only stories that advance a “woke” Democrat agenda, and not reporting important news that does not support their narrative. It is much easier to manipulate history, because the people being lied about and all the witnesses who know the truth are long dead.
Years ago, author and journalist George Orwell wrote that oppressive regimes control and manipulate history to control and manipulate people. In his words, “He who control the present controls the past. He who controls the past controls the future”.

This story reveals the lengths that the “woke” liars will go to in advancing their sick agenda. Now, 8000 people will tell this lie to, God only knows, how many others. The people who advanced this lie should be fired from their jobs. They have no business teaching at Richard Stockton University or any other school in this Nation. They have dishonored and shamed the life, memory and factual history of a great Founding Father and Patriot, who sacrificed his life, liberty and sacred honor, for their right to pervert his true sacrifice to our great Nation with their lies. These people need to be stopped and shamed for their behaviors.
