Will Murphy’s New Pick For State Board of Ed Be As “Woke” As Stockton?

Last week, NJ Governor Murphy nominated Claudine Keenan, Stockton’s Dean of Education, to the New Jersey State Board of Education.  The State Board of Education consists of 13 members appointed by the Governor and approved by a majority of State Senators.  However, any single State Senator can use “Senatorial Courtesy” to block the appointment of anyone residing in his or her district.  Claudine Keenan lives in Galloway Township, in Atlantic County.  That is in the 9th Legislative District represented by Republican State Senator Chris Connor.  We have been told that because Claudine Keenan lives in Atlantic County, Republican State Senator Vince Polistina may also use “Senatorial Courtesy” to block her appointment.

Members of the State Board of Education receive no salary.  Most are employed government agencies or government employee unions.  Their jobs are funded by taxpayers and they are given paid leave to do their “unpaid” work for the State Board of Education.

However, the State Board of Education has enormous power.  It makes rules and policies that control controls the rules, policies, and budgets of each of New Jersey’s 2,500 public schools in 636 school districts, together with roughly 85 charter schools.

We know very little about Claudine Keenan other than what is in the media release issued by Stockton University when she was nominated by Governor Murphy.  Click here for link to Stockton University Media Release of September 30, 2022:

“Keenan has served as the Dean of Education for Stockton University for more than 10 years overseeing bachelors, masters and doctoral programs for more than 1,000 students. Prior to her role as dean, Keenan worked as the Chief Planning and Budget Officer for Stockton, where she was responsible for the supervision of institutional research and institutional assessment and accreditation.

“Keenan received her bachelor’s degree in English and Secondary Education from Adelphi University, her master’s degree in Rhetoric and Composition from California State University, and her Doctorate in Education in Educational Leadership from the University of Massachusetts. . . “

We know absolutely nothing about any of her views or past actions on any of the issues that concern us the most.  Will she support forcing local school districts to adopt standards and materials designed to sexualize younger children, and normalize abnormal sexual practices?  Will she support forcing local school districts to teach the fake history and science of “woke” Democrats?  Will work to make every local school public school as intolerant of free speech and independent critical thinking as is done at Stockton University?  Will she support Governor Murphy’s systematic harassment of charter schools?

Claudine Keenan’s Facebook page shows no posts or comments on these or any other public issues.  (14) Claudine Keenan | Facebook Her eleven minutes of remarks to participants of the leadership training program of “Lead New Jersey” also tell us very little about her views on any specific issues she will deal with on the State Board of Education. It is very important for State Senator Chris Connor and other Senators on the Senate Committees in charge of her confirmation hearings question her in detail on these issues.  Sadly, regardless of Claudine Keenan’s personal views, she is a full time, highly paid, non-tenured, at-will employee of the “woke” radical leftist regime that runs Stockton University.  Even if Keenan doesn’t personally share those views, it would be difficult for her to oppose their agenda on the State Board of Education and keep her job there.

Claudine Keenan would replace Andrew Mulvihill who has been on the State Board of Education since 2011.  Mulvihill has consistently supported parents.  For years, he vocally and effectively opposed efforts to mandate “woke” programs, policies, and indoctrination in New Jersey public schools. Mulvihill is also the CEO of Crystal Springs Builders in Hardyston and the owner of Mountain Resort Properties in Vernon, NJ.  He is one of the few members of the State Board of Education not employed by a government funded entity or government employee union.
