- We need new power plants to stop more rate hikes and avoid massive power failures like in Puerto Rico and Europe.

2. Atlantic City Electric raised its rates 20% last year, and proved need for 17% increase this year.
3. We are paying more because Governor Murphy’s Democrats shut down 6 NJ power plants during the past seven years. One was at Beesleys Point in Upper Township by the Garden State Parkway Bridge at Milepost 28. Another was the Oyster Creek nuclear plant in Lacey Township.

4. Since Democrats shut down those plants, every electric company in NJ now buys much of its electricity at very high prices from out of state. This is causing the big rate hikes. Many politicians are telling us to oppose the rate hikes at hearings of the NJ BPU (Board of Public Utilities). However, they know the BPU cannot force any private business to sell a product for less than the cost of buying and delivering it.
5. Democrats are lobbying for special deals to protect their voters and make “somebody else” pay. They want to delay this year’s increase until after the November election for Governor. That would cause a double increase next year. Democrats then want electric bills to be based on “family income” instead of cost. That way, only businesses, government agencies, and high and middle-income families to pay to full cost of expensive electricity.
6. We need more electricity to power electric cars and Artificial Intelligence. We urgently need new power plants.
7. The two nuclear reactors at Salem supply 42% of New Jersey’s electricity. They are the only reason we don’t have routine power failures like Puerto Rico or super-high rates like California and Rhode Island. As it is, New Jersey already has the 10th highest electric rates in America. Natural gas produces 49% of New Jersey’s electricity. Utility companies are forced to pay top retail prices for 7% of their electricity from solar panels. However, sunlight in New Jersey is unpredictable and intermittent. Much of its electricity is produced when not needed and is wasted.
8. Atlantic City Electric installed “smart” meters to be ready for Puerto Rico type power failures. It can now instantly cut off the power of any customer it chooses from its home office.
9. The only way to fix this problem is to replace the six power plants that Murphy’s Democrats shut down and then built more.

10. The quickest and cheapest site for a new power plant is Beesleys Point in Upper Township. It was safely used as a power plant since 1962. All needed permits, environmental approvals, transformers, and transmission lines are already in place. It cost far more and take years to locate, prepare, and get permits for a site anywhere else.
11. A power plant at Beesleys Point plant can be fueled by cheap, safe and abundant natural gas from Pennsylvania. South Jersey Gas made plans for a 22 mile pipeline to bring it from Millville15 years ago!
12. The current owners of the Beesley’s Point site want permits from Upper Township to build 768 homes there. That would be another big mistake. It would condemn the entire state to endless rate hikes and the power failures. It would also cause massive local tax hikes to fund public schools, police protection and new water and sewer service.
13. Upper Township needs to deny those permits. It must re-zone the use of that site back to what it was since 1962—a vital power plant!
14. New Jersey made many big mistakes with energy during the past ten years. We paid hundreds of millions of dollars for useless wind turbine and solar projects. We let “woke” Democrats stop South Jersey Gas from building a 22 mile natural gas pipeline under existing roads to Millville. We let them shut down the Beesleys Point plant in 2019. Even worse, we watched Democrats cheer when they completely destroyed the cooling tower, boilers, and smokestack for the power plant during the next four years.
15. We cannot afford any more mistakes.

Dear Seth Grossman,
I’ve heard your interesting talks with John Demasi on his Talk with a purpose show. This is Rosco – and I call into John and Harry’s show once in a while. Regarding the Beesley Point (BP) generating station that was imploded, you are correct as it was harmful to the energy needs of the people as opposed to transitioning the plant to a cleaner more useful power station with the infrastructure and connections to the grid.
The following is an assessment of the dynamics of your proposal to “re-think” the plans to redevelop the BP area away from its original purpose. If planning boards changed direction, it is very technically feasible to do with clean burning Natural Gas generators. I use GE Vernova Gas turbines in some examples just to show feasibility with available equipment. Advantage to GE offering the fastest domestic deployment and is the ONLY one of the three choices that are fully made in the USA. However- Siemens and Mitsubishi also makes them. Just for example GE has the largest installed base with about 7,000 turbines worldwide, but there are competitors, in fairness. I am relatively sure that GE Vernova and even the others would provide an assessment with actual engineering proposals and plans, should the decisions be made to replan BP.
As an example, the previous BP 450 MW station could be transitioned to Natural Gas fairly quickly in a three step process, first being to restart the pipeline. For even faster deployment there are trailer mounted turbines such as GE TM2500 that could be leased – while the permanent infrastructure is rebuilt. This approach would be scalable with several units Several of the trailer mounted units could scale to reach 100 to 150 MW. The setup time of the initial transition with the trailers would take from weeks to just a few months!
Pending Planning and permitting – As the portable generators run – the facility could be rebuilt to accommodate a permanent turbine installation with examples – a GE 7HA.02, a Siemens HL series or a Mitsubishi J series.
If focused on Buy American, National energy Security and FAST domestic deployment, GE is the only one of the three Fully Made in the USA. The GE 7HA.02 and other large frame turbines are manufactured at GE’s Greenville, South Carlina plant.
I offer this free assessment, as a concerned resident of South Jersey. As an aside – I am an engineer (half retired) and President of a small company called SERA Corp. My Brother Joe C, (now passed) was the lead design engineer with Jacobs that worked with Ted P. from AC Electric Co on the tower extension and lighting that was foolishly imploded.
Seth, I close this note with much THANKS to you for bringing important issues and quite interesting historical stories and points to help the people (who listen) today learn from history. Good LUCK in your attempt to revisit planning board decisions in Upper Township. It seems like an uphill battle but if the residents of Upper Township are fine with losing their previous property tax advantages by hosting BP, and equally concerning staggering electricity rates for ALL being proposed – well that’s above my pay grade, ty.
Sincerely,
Rosco C.
