Don’t Mandate ‘Media Literacy’ In Schools.

Teach Classic Curriculum With Critical Thinking And Online Tools Like ReclaimTheNews.com!

Mandated “Media Literacy” Is Another Form Of Leftist Indoctrination.

With an ever-growing sea of media outlets and news sources, understanding and identifying propaganda has become an essential skill. But some want to solve the problem with censorship or indoctrination. Erin McNeill, the founder and president of Media Literacy Now, has pointed out that Americans are lacking key life skills needed to navigate this increasingly intricate media landscape. This article calls for required “media literacy” training in schools.

We at Reclaim the News disagree with this perspective. We oppose both the requirement for and the concept of “media literacy” training itself. Instead, students should be trained in the classical curriculum, including logic and other time-honored subjects, such as statistical reasoning, to discern what is true and what is false. We suspect that such “media literacy” will be thinly disguised leftist indoctrination: teaching what to think and who to believe rather than how to think for oneself. It will be propaganda pretending to fight propaganda.

ReclaimTheNews.com is your tool for comparing and contrasting diverse viewpoints, empowering you to think independently and critically. It’s easier to trust your instincts when you have all the information and unbiased tools to compare and contrast where all voices have an equal chance to reach you.

Recognizing Propaganda in All Media, Including “Trusted Sources”

Propaganda infiltrates various media forms, making its recognition essential for shaping an informed perspective. According to Professor Nicole Cooke of the American Library Association, “Propaganda is information that is subjective and primarily used to influence the target audience and further an agenda, often by presenting facts selectively.” Others say that the challenge of identifying propaganda is compounded by deficits in science and media literacy education, which are linked to beliefs in discredited conspiracy theories. They conclude that this underscores the necessity of critically evaluating all media sources, including what some call “trusted sources.” But should it be “evaluated” and censored before you have a chance to see it for yourself?

We at ReclaimTheNews.com agree that presenting facts selectively is a form of propaganda, also called “lie by omission.” We disagree that the solution is to empower some adults to decide what other adults are allowed to hear, i.e., censorship and indoctrination. Who has the halo over their head to determine which sources are the guilty parties? The answer is – whoever has the power to do so – and – doing so will help them stay in control.

We agree on teaching science in general terms. This should mean learning to think scientifically and not being brainwashed about “trusted sources.” Telling students to believe Dr. Fauci is not teaching science. Neither would telling students not to believe Dr. Fauci be teaching science. Learning why some experts agree with him and why others don’t is learning science. (See above for our opinion on required “media literacy” training.)

We disagree with name-calling – thought-stopping labels like “misinformation” and “conspiracy theory.” Such labels commit the fallacy of begging the question. Students need to learn to think for themselves and not be told what to think.

ReclaimTheNews.com is dedicated to empowering people to think for themselves by laying it all out there. We provide the tools and resources to help you compare all the different viewpoints, inspiring you to engage in critical thinking and independent analysis.

Exploring the Media Landscape with Innovative Tools

Navigating the modern media landscape requires innovative tools to handle the flood of information, particularly on social media platforms. Just over half of U.S. adults, 54%, report that they at least sometimes get news from social media platforms, a figure that has seen a slight increase in recent years. Notably, about a third of U.S. adults regularly consume news via Facebook and YouTube, highlighting the need for innovative solutions to parse through this vast information.
