Last weekend, a “kamikaze” drone, an unmanned airplane filled with explosives, crashed into an apartment building in Israel’s largest city and exploded. It killed one Israeli and injured ten others.
The drone was launched by the Houthi regime of North Yemen. The Houthis are “Shia” Muslims who follow unique “Zaydiyya” doctrines that began in Arabia a thousand years ago. Those doctrines are similar to those of most Salafi/Wahabi Sunni Muslims in Saudi Arabia today. However, because of minor disputes over doctrine and for political reasons, the Houthi regime in North Yemen is an ally of the Shia Islamic regime of Iran. It has been fighting Salafi/Wahabi Sunni regime of Saudi Arabia since 2004.
North Yemen is roughly 1,300 miles southeast of Israel. It is as far away from Israel as Cuba is from New York. The Shia Islamic regime of Iran also funds, trains and supports a Shia regime in South Lebanon near the border with Israel. That regime is known as Hezbollah. For the past nine months, Shia and Iran backed Hezbollah attacked Israel with rockets and artillery from the north. During that time, the Shia and Iran backed Houthis attacked Israel from the south with roughly 300 missiles and unmanned airplane drones. Until last weekend, all of those missiles and drones crashed or were shot down in vacant areas where they did no harm.
That changed last weekend. An advanced $4 million Houthi drone crashed into an apartment building in Tel Aviv, Israel’s largest city. Unlike previous Houthi missiles and drones, it did not fly directly from North Yemen to Israel from the southeast. It instead flew 150 miles west over the African country of Eritrea. Then it flew 1,300 miles northwest over Sudan and Egypt to the Mediterranean Sea. Then it turned sharply east to attack Tel Aviv from the west. To do this, the drone flew 300 miles out of its way, travelled 1,600 miles, and was in the air for 16 hours. It also did sophisticated navigation and steering. The Israelis were not expecting an attack from the Mediterranean Sea in the west and were completely surprised. Residents of the Tel Aviv apartment building got absolutely no warning. They were sound asleep when the drone exploded at 3:15 A.M.
Few, if any mainstream American media reported any of this as headline news. The ABC Sunday evening news the day after the Houthi drone attack did not mention it at all. However, the ABC Sunday TV news did have time to present a four-minute detailed story on pandas at the San Diego Zoo that had been donated by the Chinese Communist regime.
None in the American mainstream media reported any details about last weekend’s Houthi drone attack. The American public had no idea how big and sophisticated this drone was. We had no idea that this drone was an unmanned airplane that flew for 1,600 miles, did extensive steering and navigation, and was in the air for 16 hours. There were no discussions of how this was like someone in Cuba launching an unmanned airplane, having it fly into the Gulf of Mexico, then northeast along the Appalachian Trail until it reached the Poconos. Then it would take a sharp right turn and fly east until it would crash into an apartment building in Manhattan.
One week later, Israel retaliated. Its warplanes flew 1,300 miles to destroy fuel tanks, a power plant, and loading facilities at Hudaydah, the main port that supplies the Houthi regime. This attack by Israel got major media attention. Since the media reported little or nothing about last weekend’s drown, or the 300 previous attacks by the Houthis, Israel’s response appeared to be excessive or unjustified.
