“Liberty And Prosperity” became the motto of New Jersey in 1776, one month after the Declaration of Independence was signed. It reminded people that the great wealth, safety and opportunities we enjoy are made possible by liberty. That means having government that secures our freedom to make the most important decisions affecting our own lives. Two powerful symbols of liberty were all included in the new seal and flag of our state. One was the red Phrygean, or Liberty cap. According to legend, it was worn by slaves in ancient Rome who had gained their freedom. Another was the wooden pike. That was the simple weapon of common people in Europe who could not afford swords, shields, armor or horses to defend themselves. It was almost useless in the hands of one man trying to defend his rights and property himself. However, if every citizen gathered with his pike to defend the rights of every other citizen whose rights and property were threatened, they could overwhelm armored knights with their simple wooden pikes and knock them off their high horses.
