Weekly Update – 19 August, 2012

LIBERTYandPROSPERITY.org

  1. Thank you very much to the 20 members, non-voting members, and guests who marched in the Military Appreciation Day Parade last Wednesday.? We had been hoping for 50 people, and we know that several others planned to attend, but were discouraged by the thunderstorms that took place one hour before the parade began.?? Still, we made an organized and effective presentation with our symbolic wooden poles draped with red liberty caps, and our red, white, and blue sashes.? We hope that more of you will join us next time.

2.?????? Regular Breakfast Discussion this Saturday, August 4 from 9:30AM to 10:30AM at the Shore Diner. Tilton and Fire Roads in Egg Harbor Township. ?Our guest speaker will be Republican Assemblyman Chris Brown of Atlantic Couny.? Regular radio program on 92.1FM heard in most of South Jersey Saturday 8AM to 9AM.? Seth Grossman will be guest on Larry Trulli and Dan Klein radio programs on 1020AM (Ocean City) until Monday from 8AM to 10AM.? ??Roughly 35 to 45 people now attend our breakfast discussions on a regular basis.? They are not the same people.? We don?t expect you to attend every breakfast meeting, but you should attend one meeting every month or two?and bring a friend.

3.? The Governor?s Education Funding Task Force will hold its second public hearing at 3PM on Tuesday, Agusut 21, at the Civic Hall on the campus of Camden County Community College in Blackwood.?? The Task Force was set up at the request of conservative Republican Senator Mike Doherty.??? Liberty and Prosperity non-voting member Chuck Urban of Absecon is a member of that Task Force.?? According to the New Jersey Constitution, all money collected from the New Jersey Income Tax is supposed to reduce property taxes for all New Jersey taxpayers.???? One of the basic principles of Liberty and Prosperity is that all tax and zoning laws be fair, simple, and applied equally to everyone.?? However, property taxes are too high in New Jersey because more than two thirds of all state income tax money is given to just 31 school districts, while the remaining one third is shared by more than 580 remaining school districts.???? Seth Grossman and Clarence Abbott will be driving up to speak at that public hearing.?? If you would like to join them, please contact Seth Grossman at 609-927-7333 or sethgrossman49@gmail.com.

4.????? Trevor Loudon of New Zealand will speak to us at 9:30 AM on Saturday morning, September 1 at the Shore Diner.?? The Shore Diner is at Tilton and Fire Roads by Parkway Exit 36 in Egg Harbor Township.? A $10 donation is suggested. Trevor Loudon has long been recognized as one of the leading conservatives who brought low tax, limited government to? New Zealand and revived their sick economy.?? He created a sensation in this country by doing extensive investigation on how? professionals in the KGB (secret police and army special operations) of the old Soviet Union paid and cultivated the people who befriended and promoted Barack Obama and launched his political career.?? We will have this program instead of our August movie.?? We do not necessarily endorse or agree with all of his conclusions, but do agree that he presents important facts that have been suppressed by the mainstream media.

5.?????? Buy and sell tickets for Richard Somers Day ceremony and fundraiser.?? The ceremony will be sponsored by the Somers Point Historical Society led by Sally Hastings on Sunday, September 9 at 2PM.?? We will hold our fundraiser from 3PM to 4:30 PM at Gregory?s Restaurant and Bar one block away at 900 Shore Road in Somers Point.?? Tickets are $25 per person, $35 per couple, and includes dinner and cash bar at Gregory?s Bar and Restaurant in Somers Point. For details, go to http://www.libertyandprosperity.org or contact sethgrossman49@gmail.com.?? We can only continue our present level of activity if we sell about 75 tickets and raise $5,000.? Please do your part by buying your tickets in advance.?? Tickets can be purchased at any breakfast meeting, or in person or by mail at 453 Shore Road, Somers Point, New Jersey.? Telephone 609-927-7333 or email sethgrossman49@gmail.com.

6.?? Latest unemployment figures confirm what we have been saying for the past year.?? The New Jersey unemployment rate is now 9.8%–the highest unemployment rate since Jimmy Carter was President in 1977.? We lost 12,000 jobs in July, and now have the 4th worst economy and 4th highest unemployment rate in the country. Is anybody surprised??? Thanks to Republican Governor Christie?s ?bipartisanship? with Democrat State Senate President Steve Sweeney, New Jersey has the highest combination of sales taxes, business taxes, hotel taxes, income taxes, and property taxes in the country.? We have some of the biggest government debt in the country?yet Christie and Sweeney just agreed to ask for another $850 million borrowing package to be approved by voters this November!?? Thanks to ?green energy?, the ?societal benefits? fee, and the ?stranded costs? program to bail out bad projects, New Jersey has the highest electric rates in the country.??? We have the worst ?fee-shifting? lawsuit laws in the country which allows lawyers to collect $50,000 fees when they collect $100 for their clients.? And we have the most oppressive zoning and environmental laws in the country, that encourage a ?pay to play? culture to avoid them.?? What is even worse is that because Republican Governor Christie fooled so many people into thinking he is a conservative, many Democrats and others are blaming conservative principles for New Jersey?s bad economy.??? Next year, the entire New Jersey Legislature will again be up for election.?? Will any Republicans who run in the June primary be friends of liberty??? If not, will you be a candidate?

7.? ??Become a full voting member of LibertyAndProsperity.org! Dues are $60 per year, attend 3 business meetings each year, and work on at least one volunteer project each year. Or be a non-voting supporting member for just $30 per year, with no other commitment.

8.?? The November elections are just over two months away.???? In just two months, almost 400 years of our unique American government and culture of liberty can be completely swept away.?? Please? read the rough draft of that column for the Current and Gazette weekly newspapers in Atlantic and Cape May Counties and forward your corrections and suggestions for improvement to Seth at sethgrossman49@gmail.com. Thanks.

In 1776, ?our forefathers brought forth on this continent a new nation conceived in liberty?.?? They did it to preserve their special form of government and way of life?things that existed in only a few places for short periods of time during the last 6,000 years of human history.

Our American government and way of life had evolved slowly over the previous 169 years from a series of events so rare and lucky, that even non-religious skeptics like Benjamin Franklin often remarked that God must have blessed America.

The process started in the 1600?s when the kings of England set up colonies in North America.?? They did it because the kings of Spain had become rich and powerful from colonies in Mexico and South America during the 1500?s.

But the English kings were stuck with the leftovers.? They found no gold, silver, or trade routes here.?? In desperation the English kings tried to make some money by offering liberty to anyone who voluntarily settled here.???? They did this with written contracts like the Mayflower Compact of 1620 and the charters that created New Jersey in 1654.??? These documents guaranteed certain ?unalienable? rights that could never be taken away.??? The English government promised it would never punish or take the property of their subjects living in America unless a jury of their peers found them guilty of a crime.?? Americans were forever free to buy, sell, own, and improve land, build and farm on it, make and enforce contracts, own and keep whatever wages or profits they earned.
Americans were free to worship however they pleased, build their own churches and choose their own clergy.??? And they could not be forced to pay any taxes not imposed by the representatives they elected.

?Progressive? historians remind us that only property owners could vote back then.?? But they fail to mention that only property owners paid taxes back then.? This guaranteed that taxes were very low, and paid for only those few things that almost everyone agreed were necessary.

Most people who came to America were Protestants who believed every Christian had to read and write well enough to understand the Bible, and know enough bookkeeping and arithmetic to build and operate a church.???? But at that time, the Pope could not appoint priests? in British colonies, so Catholics ran their churches in America much like Protestants.
For 169 years, American men and women used their education and their liberty to buy land, make contracts, design ships and buildings, and run farms, businesses, and local governments?all without lawyers and accountants.

This ?accidental? combination of liberty, low taxes, and good education paid for by voluntary contributions made Americans the wealthiest people in the world by 1776.
If the kings of England knew right away how wealthy Americans were getting, they would have taken control and taxed Americans as much as Englishmen right away.?? But Americans were lucky again.
For nearly 150 years, the kings of England were too busy fighting wars with Spain, France, Ireland, and Scotland–and a civil war with Parliament.

The King of England did not find out how rich Americans were until 1763, when his top officials came to America with the English army to drive the French out of Canada.?? He then acted quickly to tax and control the Americans.?? But he was too late.?? The Americans were too strong, pushed back and fought and won our independence after eight years of war.
Four score and seven (87) years later, in 1863, 500,000 Americans died in a Civil War to win those rights for black Americans.

For the next hundred years, from 1863 to 1963, Americans continued to enjoy more liberty, more prosperity, more justice, more scientific progress, and more peace than any other people in the world.

But during that time, while most Americans were busy raising families, building businesses, and pursuing careers, the ?Progressives? in our public schools and colleges did not teach our children this history of how we Americans developed our government and culture of liberty.? Or how liberty gave us 300 years of more wealth, opportunity, and justice, better health, and less poverty than any other people on earth.

They instead falsely taught our children that America was selfish, racist, violent, and unjust nation that needed to be change.??The November elections are just over two months away.??? Nearly 400 years of American liberty can be swept away forever.?? Unless you do your part to defend it.?? Do more than vote.
