On July 18 and July 20, WOND Talk Radio Host Dan Klein took these videos of all five wind turbines in Atlantic City shutting down when the wind stopped blowing during the heat wave.
If a gas, coal, oil or nuclear power plant suddenly stopped working, it would be headline news. Thousands would be without power until plants started working again. However, when wind turbines stop, nobody notices. There are two reasons for this.
First, hardly any electricity in New Jersey is produced by wind. If the wind stops, very little new electricity is needed from other sources.
Second, everybody expects the wind to stop often and unexpectedly. As a result, extra back-up nuclear or fossil fuel burning generators are constantly running as back-ups. Does anybody know how to find out how much electricity from these back-ups is produces when they are not needed? Does anybody know the cost of this wasted energy, and the cost of keeping a duplicate power system that is instantly ready whenever the wind stops blowing?
Wind energy cannot be stored. Does anybody know how much wind energy is dumped and wasted whenever there is more wind? Does anybody know how to find studies showing the net value of energy from wind turbines, after subtracting the cost of a complete back-up system?
Last July 15, Michael Sullenberger, a world famous environmental expert and author of “Apocalypse Never” spoke in Ocean City, NJ. He told us that the cost of 99 Orsted wind turbines 16 miles in the ocean would pay for “half a nuclear power plant”. However, a nuclear power plant would not require any duplicate back up system constantly running fossil fuels.
