Wind, Solar and Cold

In January 2025 the six New England states experienced a severe but not unusual cold snap which demanded additional grid supplied electricity. The electricity was provided by old oil and coal fossil fuel plants, not renewable wind and solar. The wind and solar could not provide even their share of the electricity demand.

The installed electrical capacity in the New England grid is about 30,000 Megawatts which includes 6500 MW of solar power, 1500 MW of wind with battery power estimated to range from 90 MW to 1500 MW.  Renewable energy is a minimum of 25% of the grid installed capacity. Yet as the cold wave swept over New England, the renewable energy electricity dropped to 1% of the supply. Instead of saving the day, the renewables absence made a bad situation almost a catastrophe.  Fortunately, the old oil and coal plants filled the electricity gap.

When these old plants are shut down along with the natural gas plants and wind and solar with batteries are the primary sources of electricity generation, a similar cold event may have a more unpleasant ending.
