To the best of my knowledge, we are the only organization in South Jersey that will remember Richard Somers on September 4, the day he was killed in Tripoli in 1804. We are holding an event by the Richard Somers Park in Somers Point at 10 am on Friday, September 4– the Friday before Labor Day weekend. We invite you to join us.

Richard Somers died in a war against the same people we are now fighting in Iran. They are the same people who murdered 3,000 Americans in New York City and in Washington, D.C. on September 11, 2001. The same enemy that captured and took more – than a million white Christians – as slaves from Europe and made them slaves – in Africa – for more than a thousand years. And the – same people who captured more than 5 million Black Africans as slaves throughout the Arab world.

Many organizations will remember September 11. However, nobody else is holding an event to remember when Americans fought back and defeated those people. Not the Atlantic County Historical Society. Not the Somers Point Historical Society. Not the Ocean City or Cape May County historical societies. Not a single town, not a single library.

Why don’t we talk about “moderate” Muslims?

First, there is several fundamental differences between Islam and other world religions. Judaism and Christianity are both based on the Ten Commandments and the Golden Rule, “Do unto others as you would want others to do to you.” Buddhists and Hindus have similar values. Islam does not. Non-believers, no matter how good, and loving, and fair, have no place is Islam.
- Because of this, if a Muslim jihadi attacks, murders, rapes or commits any other barbaric crime against a non-Muslim in the name of Islam, you will not find any Islamic religious or community leader openly denounce the attack and claim that that the attacker was a disgrace to Islam. On the contrary, most leaders will insist on a proper Islamic burial for the perpetrator.
- It is the total opposite for Jews and Christians. In 1994, one Jew went crazy and murdered 29 Arabs who were praying in Hebron. Every Jewish religious and political openly denounced what he did. They would not let his body be buried in a Jewish cemetery. In 2009, someone shot and killed an abortion doctor. Every Christian and pro-life leader openly denounced that murderer.
- Maybe we would look at so-called moderate Muslims differently if they openly and publicly denounced every Muslim who attacks and kills non-Muslims in the name of Islam. But they never, never do. They instead come up with some excuse to blame the victim. You simply cannot live in a normal society where someone you think is a peaceful neighbor can attack you out of the blue like that. You also can’t have a normal democracy where every member of one religion will automatically vote only for members of that religion and against anyone who is not a believer of that religion.

10 ounce Wawa coffee from $1.87 to $2.98 in four weeks!

Rising Living Costs: The 20-ounce cup of coffee I just bought at Wawa is now $2.79 plus the 19-cent sales tax for a total of $2.98. It was $1.75 plus a 12 cent tax, or $1.87 just a few weeks ago. So Wawa is charging me 60% more. And the state government gave me a big 60% tax increase by basing its tax on the higher price for the same 10-ounce cup of coffee. And of course, prices are up for everything else. Groceries, restaurants, houses, rent, college tuition and doctor bills.
- This is a big deal and everybody is talking about inflation. However, very few people are talking about what is causing it, and how to stop it.
- Higher gas prices from the war in Iran. I’m sure others besides will have a lot to say about this. Probably the biggest problem is that a good leader doesn’t start a war without first explaining to people the price that must be paid to win that war. Of course, higher gas prices cause higher prices for everything else. Gas is needed for fertilizer to grow the coffee beans, roast the beans, ship them to America and then bring them to Wawa. And higher gas prices raise the cost of everything else we buy.
- Higher prices for “green” electricity. Governor Murphy and the Democrats shut down six power plants. We’re not going to have lower prices until we rebuild, replace, or reopen them.
- Federal Borrowing and Spending The Federal government spent $1.8 trillion dollars more than it took in during the past twelve months. That’s one thousand eight hundred billion dollars! Trump Republicans together with Biden Democrats increased the national debt from $19 trillion in 2016 to $40 trillion today. This is simply not sustainable. Every dollar the federal government spends more than it takes in is a dollar that the federal government prints out of thin air. It makes every dollar we have and every dollar we earn less valuable. A lot of the inflation we have is nothing more than our dollars being worth a lot less.
- Higher Property Taxes caused by public schools and local government costing too much.
- Bad Zoning Laws make it too expensive to build anything. They also smother competititon.
The people who created New Jersey in 1676 knew how to fix this. Why can’t we learn from them?

Why don’t we recognize “moderate” Muslims?
However, Islamic Law or Sharia does not teach that. It does not recognize that these basic rules of civilized behavior apply to kaffirs, that is non-believers.
Then of course, everyone we buy from is paying a lot ,more for electricity. That’s because Governor Murphy and the Democrats shut down 6 electric power plants because they want us to use windmills and solar panels instead. Of course, they cost a lot more money and they don’t work at night or when the wind isn’t blowing. We’re not going to get cheaper electricity until we rebuild, reopen or replace those six power plants.
Third, of course, is – the federal, – debt or deficit. – I believe this year, – the federal government spent $1.8 trillion more than it took in. So that’s – one thousand eight-hundred billion dollars? And that deficit is bigger than it was last year. And there’s no end in sight.
During the last ten years, our federal debt went from $20 trillion to $40 trillion. It doubled.
We all should know that every time the government spends a dollar more than it takes in, it just prints up a paper or electronic dollar that is backed by nothing. That is causing a lot of our inflation. has to print up dollar. But yet, you look at the national news, – I don’t think anyone is talking about it. – Certainly, nobody’s talking about, – doing anything to stop it. I don’t hear – the Republicans. I don’t hear Trump. I don’t – hear Democrats. It’s like – nobody cares.
But we are playing this national bar game, I think you call it pick up sticks, where – you take, you know, little sticks and you – make a big pile – and somehow the person who loses is – the person who puts the that last stick – that makes the whole pile collapse. – So I think that’s what we’re, going through – right now.
So so how do you fix a problem – like that? – I guess, the the the way to start – is you’ve got to tell people, – you know, that the federal government was never – designed – to give every American– everything they want. Our Founders made a Constitution that said, we just made this big federal government that runs this whole enormous nation. It is so big that it is not possible for every voter to keep track of – every dollar it spends. – And we will never stop waste. We will – never stop corruption, – but we will limit the federal government – to a few limited things that nobody else – can do. We’ll use the federal government to – have an army, a navy, and air force. Our national government will issue money that will be good all over the world. It will make and enforce immigration laws. It will deliver the mail. It will make sure that artists and inventors get paid for their work. It will equally enforce all laws to everyone and equally keep everyone and their property safe.
If our federal government did only these things, like it was designed to do, it would be very easy to control waste and corruption.
But what do people expect from the federal – government today? – Well, you know, I went to the beach and some of the sand washed away. The water is too close to my house. I want the federal government to move sand from somewhere else and put it in front of my house to make it more valueable. The streets are bumpy. – I’m going to talk to my Congressman Jeff Van Drew. I’m going to tell him to pave my streets in Atlantic City, and Margate, and Longport, because I don’t want my property taxes to go up to pave those streets. I want somebody else to pay.
I live in Atlantic City and I helped get our Mayor Marty Small elected. So I the federal government to give COVID 19 relief money so some of it can give my kid a $10,000 scholarship.
And somebody just told me about a racket with some of the Food Banks. For years, I thought they gave out food that was donated by people who had to give it away before it went bad. But now I know that the federal government gives millions of dollars ot these food banks. And I’ve heard a lot of stories about – people – going into these food banks on a regular – basis, – taking the food, and then selling them in – stores – in Atlantic City and Pleasantville.
So, of course, nobody cares – if any of this money is wasted – because, – you you know, if you work for the – government, the more money you give away, you – know, the more important your position is, the – more people you hire, the bigger budget you – get next year. – So we we’ve completely lost sight of the – federal government. Nobody cares about this waste and corruption, because everybody thinks somebody else is paying for it. But this is part of why we have that $40 trillion debt. And that debt is why the value of our dollars is so little, and why prices are so high.
Then there’s #5, high property taxes are making things expensive. When most people think of property taxes, they think of the taxes they pay directly on their homes. And the politicians play up to this. They say, “Look, we cut your property tax. We – gave you an -ANCHOR rebate. We give you a senior citizen freeze. – We’re giving you, you know, this discount and that discount, and public and affordable housing that doesn’t pay regular property taxes.
However, most people forget that none of these tax breaks apply to Wawa. They pay the full property taxes on their stores, and when property taxes go up, their prices go up!
And and so why are property taxes so – high? – We all know why. – Almost everyone who works for the government gets more pay and benefits and does less work than most people who work elsewhere. That’s why you usually see about a dozen people apply for every government job opening. And this applies to people who work for private contractors and non-profits paid by the government.
And that often gets us right back to the Federal deficit. A lot of your state, county and local politicians say, I don’t want to raise property taxes too much. So I’m going to ask Congressman Van Drew for a grant paid by the Federal government so I could do local stuff without making my voters pay for it.
Everybody who works for the government I’d well, – I don’t say everybody, but when you say – maybe 95% – of people – a – 10 or 20 people apply for every single – opening. – So it it’s crazy. But as long as – we say, – well, you know, I don’t care how much – my local government waste. They could waste as – much money as they – want as long as we could get federal – grants, – to give them, you know, to pay for – the stuff we need. Well, that’s how things – are are going to get worse. – So, we we have that problem.
And finally, there’s #6 causing everything to be too expensive. We no longer have free enterprise and competittion in many businesses. And that’s because zoning laws make it so hard to get permits.
When we Boomers grew up, it was easy to start a business. If we went to Wawa, and thought they were charring too much, we could say, I can do a better job. Back then, you could rent a store across the street, and rent some equipment, and you could open up your own shop and sell your own coffees and make better sandwiches and sell them for less.
However, young people can’t do that anymore. The zoning laws make almost everything you want to do a violation of something. You can’t get a permit to build anything new – unless you, you get a special law. – You know, basically, our zoning laws say you – can’t build anything, – unless it meets requirements that put everybody in – violation. – So if you have money, if you have – connections, – then you can get the permits you need – to build what you want. But people who – don’t have money, who don’t have connections, – can’t, compete. So we really do not have – capitalism. We do not have free market enterprise. – We really already have socialism in America, so – you could see why young people are so – fed up. And I guess I guess I’ll – close with this. –
You know, there there was a time in – America, and I I see that clearly in – that book I wrote, the 1676 – project, – how New Jersey shaped America. – It used to be we had boundless opportunity. – So if you, – you know, came over, – to America with nothing, – you could always work on a farm, – make enough money to buy a few acres, – and then you could have your own farm. – You could work on a fishing boat till – you had enough money to buy your own – fishing boat. You could be a carpenter, a – blacksmith, a wagon driver. – And then once you had your farm, you – could dig up clay and make bricks. – You could dig up bog iron and make – iron. All these boundless opportunities. – You didn’t need a license. You didn’t need – a permit. – And the interesting thing is when the British – saw how rich Americans were getting – and the British decided, well, we’re gonna start – collecting oh, by the way, in in back – then, America had the lowest taxes in any, – civilized society – because people – educated their own children. – They took care of the poor. They, you – know, we we didn’t pay for, – charity, – through the government, but – everybody was well fed. Everybody was well housed, – and we had a good life. And when – the British wanted to take that way of – life away from us – by giving us their taxes – and their permits and their regulations and all – their laws, – Americans rebelled. And what’s interesting is – the richest you know, that rebellion was led – by the people who got rich. Your George – Washingtons, – your, – Richard Summers, your Richard Stocktons, your Ben Franklin. – They were rich. They could have afforded the – British taxes. – They had political influence. They could have had – the the British permits. – But, – what they did is they wanted to preserve – the system – that let them succeed – so everybody else could succeed. – And if you look at the rich folks – we have in America today, – you know, they got rich because they were – free to use our system. – But instead of saying, okay. We have to – make the laws simple – so everybody could go into the businesses we – succeeded at, They’re just saying, – and I don’t wanna use – the name names, but think of that fellow – in Ocean City. He’s not saying that the – zoning lords of Ocean City are so screwed – up that nobody could open up a store, – or nobody could build a hotel. Nobody could – do anything – without all these ridiculous permits. – Let’s change the laws and make them fair – for everybody. – He’s saying, well, give me my permit. You – know, change the law for me. Give me – an exception. – Give me a redevelopment plan. – So, of course, people are angry and young – people have every right to be angry. – And, the only way we’re gonna fix this – is if we go back to the roots, – that made America great in the first place. – Because again, you can’t make America great again – if you have no idea what made America – great before. That’s what we’ll be talking about, – 09/30 to 10:30 this Saturday, – and every Saturday at – at Sal’s Cafe.
