In 1772, Samuel Adams and others at a town hall meeting in Boston formed a “Committee of Correspondence.” They believed most Americans enjoyed safe, free, and prosperous lives because we had governments that respected and protected each individual’s rights equally. They also believed that British government officials were systematically taking those rights away. Their committee’s mission was to gather and share information with other Massachusetts communities. They reported news of how their rights were being denied or threatened. They suggested actions to be taken and strategies to pursue. Later, similar “Committees of Correspondence” were established elsewhere in Massachusetts in all thirteen American colonies. These committees were not a government. They were not even organizations. They were simply a network and community of individuals who shared many common values and goals. However, they built the foundation of the United States. We invite you to be part of a similar network and community of individuals in New Jersey today.
