Richard Somers of Somers Point: Cancelled Because His Story Explains September 11.

HARRY HURLEY: We visit with Seth Grossman this morning. Seth, I believe that you have done more to keep the Richard Somers flame alive than anyone I can think of.

As you pointed out, the story – of Richard Somers is remarkable. I first heard it in 2004, 200 years after Richard Somers and the entire crew of his ship Intrepid were killed in Tripoli on September 4, 1804.

Hearing that story three years after the attacks on September 11 2001, had a profound impact on me. I realized then that if Americans had remembered the story of Richard Somers, and the 12 other Americans on his ship who died in 1804, and who they fought and why they had to fight them, 3,000 Americans would not have been murdered on September 11, 2001, and we would not need ceremonies to remember them.

I learned a lot at that ceremony to remember Richard Somers in 2004. I assumed it would be a yearly event. But to my surprise, nothing was planned for September of 2005. 

And so I got together with Sally Hastings, the president of the Somers Point Historical Society. We then put together programs to remember Richard Somers every September 4 for many years.

Then, I realized that Richard Somers was not just a forgotten local hero who should be remembered. I realized then that a whole lot more was going on.

Richard Somers was probably the most significant national American hero who came from this area. He should be remembered.  And for a long time I could not understand why our community had forgotten him.

Then I realized that you cannot remember Richard Somers without telling his story. And that story can no longer be told in America.

HARRY HURLEY:  There you go. It was purposeful.

SETH GROSSMAN:  Yes it was purposeful. Richard Somers was one of the first great Americans to be cancelled.

HARRY HURLEY: Wow.

SETH GROSSMAN: And When I realized that, I was determined to do whatever I could to make sure that Richard Somers was remembered, and that his story would be told.

The Richard Somers story reminds us that America was at war with Islam more than 200 years ago. Actually, America was not at war with Islam. Islam was at war with us.

And when we told the story of Richard Somers, and how Islam justified attacks on peaceful Americans and how we had to fight a war to stop them, cities like Somers Point and schools, and colleges and business association knew that it was bad for business if they were in any way involved in telling the story of Richard Somers.

HARRY HURLEY: Pay the tribute, keep quiet, and we’ll leave you alone.

SETH GROSSMAN: Yes. We learned nothing. And I’d like to take this a step further. The Richard Somers story leads us to understand the people who murdered 3,000 Americans on September 11, 2001 and why they did it.

The details of that story and what happened afterwards explain what led to the murder of  3,000 Americans on September 11, 2001.

So let’s tell that story.  First, I’d like to thank Bob and Cindy Fertsch for publishing that story in last week’s (August 27, 2026) edition of Shore Local Magazine. It’s distributed free throughout the shore towns of South Jersey.  Last week’s edition had the picture of the blue and yellow beach umbrella on the front cover. Use this week’s Shore Local to share the story of Richard Somers. – Liberty and Prosperity

  The story begins on the night of September 4, 1804. A small merchant ship sails alone into the harbor of Tripoli in North Africa. It carries no cargo. It is instead loaded with bombs and explosives. Its captain is 26-year-old Richard Somers from Somers Point, New Jersey. He and all 12 members of his crew know they have very little chance of coming back alive. Yet they all volunteered for this mission.

For three years, they had been at war with fanatic sea fighters who were called Barbary pirates. However, these Barbary sea-fighters were not pirates at all.  Pirates were criminals. These Barbary sea-fighters were legally at war with America. They were what we call privateers in English – or corsairs in French. – They were protected by letters of marque and reprisal. They were legally allowed to attack and rob ships and coastal towns of any enemy nation–as long as they share the booty with – the ruler or government that hired them. Pirates were tried and executed as criminals when they were captured. Privateers, or corsairs in French, were supposed to be held as prisoners of war, and released at the end of the war. 

When privateers came back to their home port with their booty, the government would be put everything that was taken up for sale at a public auction. The government would get its share. The owners of the ship, the captain, and the crew would get the rest. 

For privateers from the Barbary cities of  North Africa, the cities of Tangier, Algiers, Tunis and Tripoli, the most valuable booty to be auctioned off were people. The passengers and crew of the captured ships, the people who lived in coastal villages were auctioned off and sold as slaves.

The whole economy of North Africa at that time was based on slavery. The city of Algiers in what is now Algeria had a population of a 100,000 – people, and 25,000 of them were slaves. 

This started long before The United States existed. It began more than 1200 years ago, during the 800s. That was when Arabs conquered the Roman cities of Tangier, Algiers, Tunis, and Tripoli in North Africa. Those cities became known as the Barbary Kingdoms. They would attack and rob as many coastal towns and villages in Christian Europe they could–and every ship or fishing boat from there that they could catch. 

After a few hundred years, French and Italian Crusaders stopped them for a while. But then, during the 1500s, the Ottoman Turks came in. They made the so-called Barbary Pirates a lot stronger. The raids and attacks got worse. They attacked ships and coastal towns as far away as Iceland and Ireland. During this time, They captured more than a million Europeans and sold them as slaves in North Africa.

Then, in 1560, Pope Pius V formed a “Holy League” of European Christian nations to fight back.

Now, as I’m telling you this story of Richards Somers, and explaining these events that came before, I need to ask you.  Do you remember learning any of this in high school?  Or in college?

HARRY HURLEY: This was not in our curriculum. It ignored that history. As far as I know, you know, you – had the Greeks, you had the Romans. Yeah. – Bill Gussie taught about the Barbary pirates. but not those details.

SETH GROSSMAN: It was the same with me. We learned about the Greeks and the Roman Empire. We were taught that German barbarians from Europe invaded from the North and destroyed the Roman Empire. Then we had Middle Ages and the Crusades.

But they never told us how half of the Romand Empire became Muslim. They never explained how all of the Middle East, Egypt and North Africa changed from being lands of Greek and Latin-speaking Christians to Arabic speaking Muslims. We didn’t learn any of that stuff.

But – anyway, Europe fought back. And for two hundred – years, the Christians of Europe and the Turks and Arabs of the Middle East and North Africa reached a standoff.  They all got tired of fighting endless wars against each other.

In Europe, Catholics and Protestants were starting to fight each other. There were wars between England and Spain. The Barbary Kingdoms were losing money in their wars against Europeans.

So they all worked out a deal. The Barbary Kingdoms told European Christians, we will stop raiding your villages – and your ships. We will stop enslaving Europeans.  Just pay us money and we’ll leave you alone.

By the way, at this time, the Barbary Kingdoms were already finding that it was much easier and cheaper to cross the Sahara Desert and capture and buy Black Africans as slaves than to fight wars with Europeans.

So for the next two hundred years, during the 1600s and 1700s, Spain, Portugal, England, and France, all paid money to the Barbary Kingdoms.  And they were all left alone. 

And because we Americans were part of the British Empire, Americans could sail anywhere in the world without being attacked because we were protected by the British bribes, which they called tribute. 

And then on July 4, 1776, we Americans declare our independence.  After seven years of war, in 1783, the world recognizes the United States as an independent nation. Our ships continue to sail all over the world. However, now our ships fly a new flag. They fly the stars and stripes instead of the British flag, the Union Jack. – And instantly, we find out that the Barbary Kingdoms read the newspaper. They immediately started, attacking our ships, robbing our people, and selling them into slavery.  Brian Kilmeade described this in detail in his book Thomas Jefferson and the Tripoli Pirates.

And so when we asked the Europeans, “Well, – what should we do? We’ve got to get together and fight back!” But we were instead told “Do what we’re doing. – Just pay them, and they’ll leave you alone.”

We Americans did that for about ten years. About 10% of the federal budget of the United States was spent on tribute and bribes to these Barbary Kingdoms.

However, we had a problem. Because America was such a peaceful nation, we had no navy, and the Barbary Kingdoms knew it. So, no matter how – much we paid them as tribute, every year they demanded more.

So finally, in 1798, Americans come up with this slogan, “Millions for – defense, – not one cent for tribute!” – We didn’t pay a dime in tribute anymore. Every nickel we had been paying for tribute, was instead used to build warships and pay sailors for a brand-new navy. Richard Somers of Somers Point was one of the first to join.

HARRY HURLEY: That policy lasted for a very, very long time. – I think it’s fair to say that in modern history, it was broken because people did start paying to get hostages back – and things like that even if they didn’t – admit it. But that became the long stated – policy of America. And it kept Americans safe.

SETH GROSSMAN: Yes, that policy kept Americans safe for 150 years.

HARRY HURLEY:  Before you continue your yearly narrative on Richard Somers, I want to announce that the Hurley in the Morning Charity is a regular contributor to Liberty and Prosperity because we want to help your organization deliver this great public message. SETH GROSSMAN:  When you read that book, and I admit it’s not easy. It’s like – reading a Russian novel where you have – to pay attention to the details, the names. I guarantee – you when when you and Marge finish reading – that book, – you will know more than 90 per 95 – of all the experts at the Pentagon and – State Department put together, – because it’s a brilliant work. And hopefully, I’ll – have time to, to get to that part of the story today at the end…

So now it’s 1798. Americans have had enough of paying tribute. – We say “Millions for defense, not one cent for tribute! We build warships. We build a new navy. Richard Somers of Somers Point is one of the first to join.

In 1801, Thomas Jefferson sends our navy to the Mediterranean Sea to fight the Barbary kingdoms of North Africa. However, for the first two years, the war – is an absolute disaster – because it was led by admirals or commanders – who followed rules of engagement. – They wanted to make sure we were only – fighting – pirates. – We were not fighting the Turks. We were not fighting any of the Barbary kingdoms that were not at war with us or not working with the so-called pirates.

And there were four Barbary kingdoms, – there’d be Algiers and Tunis and Morocco and – Tripoli. – So Algiers would say, we’re at peace with – you. – So, we would not attack any of the – ships from Algiers, just the ones from Tripoli. – And later, the pirates from Tripoli would sail right by our warships by flying an Algerian flag. They ran circles around. Our blockade of Tripoli was a joke. We didn’t protect any Americans. We didn’t protect anyone else. We  just spent a whole lot of money and – wasted two years and became the laughingstock – of Europe. 

Finally, in 1803, President Thomas Jefferson – fires the admiral or commodore in charge, and replaces him with a guy called – Edward Preble. – Edward Preble takes command, and Preble gives full authority – to his 26 year old commanders – to do whatever it took to win the – war.  The three best known commanders were Richard – Summers of Summers – Point, Stephen Decatur of what is now Ocean – City, Maryland, and Charles Stewart of of Philadelphia.

Those young commanders track down, approach, board and search every single ship they see. – They didn’t care what kind of flag it – was flying. – In fact, they would fly different flags. They – took down the American flag. They’d put up – the Dutch flag, the Turkish flag, every flag – they could. And finally, they hired translators and they saw that the pirates and kingdoms fighting against us were using fake documents to hide what they were doing. And these young Americans got wise to it and stipped them.

In less than a year, they captured or sank enemy ships all over the Mediterranean. In less than a year, all of the Barbary kingdoms made peace with America – except one, and that was Tripoli. The king of Tripoli took all of his warships out of the Mediterranean and into the safety of his own harbor.

He and the American sailors all knew that Congress was getting tired of spending – money on this endless foreign war, that they were going to bring the American fleet home before they finished the job–before they destroyed the warships of that last Barbary kingdom of Tripoli.

And the American sailors realized if they did not win the war – and finish the job – with that last fleet in Tripoli, – all their work and all the sacrifice and – all the suffering would have been for nothing. – So Richard Summers and the others come up – with a plan – to bring the war to an end – in one dramatic – battle. And that brings us to September 4, 1804.

HARRY HURLEY: I’m a huge fan – of great storytellers, and I’ve been criticizing – Republicans in general, not all, – but many that are very bad storytellers. And – I and I think it’s a big reason – why we’re losing – on so many issues that are flat out – winners. – And, Seth, along with all of our listeners, – I’m enjoying the narrative. Time is yours.

SETH GROSSMAN: Thank you. And I’ve been trying to get, – by the way, Republicans and Democrats to tell – the story of Richard Summers – Because when Americans know the the story of – Richard Summers, they understand why – we have to do certain things that we’re – doing in The Middle East. But because they – don’t know that this has been going on – for two hundred and twenty years, – they they don’t understand – what’s going on today. It’s true. By the – way, just ten seconds. – Breaking news in real time. Tiger Woods – has changed his not guilty plea. – He has entered into a plea deal for – his DUI case. That has literally – happened – just now. Seth, time is yours. Thank you. – And, of course, – since I I could only tell part of – the story – in one hour on the radio. So here we are. – It’s the night of September fourth – of eighteen o four. – Richard Summers and the 12 members of his – crew. – Second in command, by the way, is Henry – Wadsworth. – And, he became the you know, his, – sister was pregnant. – And when he was killed on the intrepid, – his sister named, – the nephew, the child, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. – So you had, – some of the – finest men in America were on that ship – with Richard Summers. – And they knew they had little chance of – coming out alive, but they knew they had – fought this war for three years. – And they knew that the first two years – had been completely wasted and frittered away – by following rules of engagement that did nothing – but get Americans killed, – but did nothing to defeat the enemy. – In just ten months, – they accomplished more in those ten months to – win the war Wow. Than the navy had – done during the previous two years. They were – on the verge of ending the war, but – they knew they were getting dispatches from congress – that, – Americans were tired of the war. They don’t – wanna pay for the war. Okay. They were – caught – in fact, – Thomas Jefferson had just bought Louisiana from the – French and they had to pay the French, – I think $4,000,000 – for Louisiana. – So the word was, – the navy would be called home immediately. They’d – pay whatever ransom had to be paid. They’d – start paying tribute again. – They just didn’t wanna fight the war anymore. – So the young 26 year old commander said – we’ve got to do something dramatic. – So they took a captured Arab ship. – They loaded it with explosives and bombs. – The last, – Barbary fleet in Tripoli was in the harbor. – They were going to – sneak that boat in to the, enemy fleet, – and detonate it, light a fuse, escape on – a rowboat, and then destroy the enemy fleet. – It was a long shot, but they figured – they had to do it. It turned out – Richard Summers, they they sailed that ship into – Tripoli Harbor. – Their shipmates watched them, you know, disappear into – the darkness. There was a a moon that – that lit them up. They could see where – they were going. And then suddenly, there was – a enormous explosion, – and everybody knew the explosion was too soon. – Richard Summers, his entire crew, they were killed – instantly. – It looked like the whole project was a – failure. – Sure enough, just as Richard Summers – predicted, – a month later, a ship comes in from – America. – They’re told the war is over. Pack up. – We’re going home. Here’s a bunch of money, – paid to get the rest of our prisoners – out of, North Africa. – We lost. We’re sorry. We did our best. – After the sacrifice that Richard Summers and Henry – Wadsworth and the others had made, – the crew of the, the American sailors, – offshore, they were livid, – and they went rogue. – And they didn’t use did not use that – money to pay off the tribute and end – the war. They used the money, – to send the marines ashore Wow. And, and – hire a bunch of Greek Christian mercenaries – and, and storm the shores of Tripoli. – We won the victory – that Richard some was denied to Richard Summers. – America made treaties with all the North African – countries, – and, – and and we no longer paid tribute, and – we changed the world by doing that. So – they went all out rogue to do that. – They did. Wow. So, Were they welcomed as – heroes? And Well, of course, when it worked, – of course, they were welcomed as heroes. – But that’s that’s another story that is not – often told. But here’s here’s where it goes – further. Here’s where it leads the Richard Summers – story leads us – to 09/11/2001. – So what happened – Europeans had been paying bribes to the, – Barbary Kingdoms for two hundred years because they – figured it was impossible – to defeat them, – and it wasn’t worth it to defeat them. – After the Americans – won this stunning victory – And remember, America was only a tiny country, – had 5,000,000 people, only 17 states, had only – been in existence for thirty years, – and yet the Americans – defeated a power, an evil power that the – Europeans couldn’t deal with – for, for two, three hundred years. – So what happened is the Europeans say we’re – gonna do what the Americans did, and they’re – going to, – conquer all these, – Barbary kingdoms. And this is how, by the – way, European colonialism – begins. – Not because they wanted to conquer anybody. They – just didn’t wanna be attacked anymore. They didn’t – wanna pay tribute anymore. – And so they made enormous changes in the – whole Islamic world. – It’s important to remember that at that time, – the Turks, the Ottoman Turks, – were the rulers of the Islamic world. There – was something called a caliph. – The sultan of Turkey was like the pope – and the emperor at the same time. Wow. – He controlled, – how Sharia law was interpreted. – He declared when there would be war or – peace, jihad, – or truces. – And he – led all of the Muslims as far away – as The Philippines, – as India, as Indonesia. – And so what happened after first the Americans – and then the Europeans win this victory, – the Ottoman Turks – changed the way the Islamic world is run. – Now they get rid of remember I said – how slavery was the key to the Islamic – world? – They agree. They get rid of the slavery – in most of the Islamic world. – They send their children to learn English and – French and German. – They modernize. – Their women stop, – following these ancient Islamic countries. – They allow the French to build the Suez – Canal in Egypt. – They build railroads. – The Islamic world is now becoming peaceful with – the rest of Europe. – The Greek people are allowed to be freed, – the Serbs, the Romanians. – So suddenly, – it looks like we could have peace between – the – Christian world and the Islamic world for the – first time in a thousand years. Wow. – And then something happens. And you’ll talk about – it after the final break? Yes. We’ll have – about eleven, twelve minutes uninterrupted. And they stepped – in, and they ended the piracy. – They ended the attacks. They ended the slavery. – They ended the bribes. – And finally, the rulers of Turkey, – the, – the caliph, – the the caliph, the sultan – that rules the entire Islamic world announces – that the Islamic world has got to change – and learn how to deal with, – other people. And it looks like we’re on – the verge of peace – between the Islamic world and the Christian world – for the first time ever. But somebody wouldn’t – like that, so it wasn’t allowed to happen. – Well, you’re you’re getting ahead of me here. – I know. I’m just But And we only – have eleven minutes. But but but in the – deserts of Saudi Arabia, – there were, a warrior king called Mohammed Saud, – who is the ancestor of the Saudi family – that runs Saudi Arabia today. – There was a, a radical – imam called Mohammed Wahab, spelled w a h – h a b. – And according to, – them and they also had a – a a scholar from India – called Shah Waliullah – of Delhi, India. And at that time, India – and Pakistan were one country ruled by the – British, – and it was about 20%, – Muslim. – They became – angry at the Turks – for betraying – Islam. – They said the Turks had gone soft. The – Turks had gone corrupt. The Turks had forgotten – about jihad. The Turks were only in it – for the money. – And so they began a rebellion – against the Turks. – And their philosophy was this, they said, – Allah wanted Muslims – to rule the world. – They said in just one hundred years, – Mohammed – and the first two generations of his followers – had conquered, – all of the Middle East, all of North – Africa, all of Persia, – and all of India – in less than a hundred years. – And now they said – they were being defeated by even the Americans. – This tiny country defeats Islam. – Now all the other Christian countries are attacking – Islam. – Now the British are keeping them from conquering – the rest of India. – What caused this disaster to the Islamic world? – And they said, it’s because we are no – longer following the ways of Mohammed. – So they said we must now return to – the intolerance – of the Arabian Desert in the dark ages. – We must wrap up the women. – We must get rid of music. We must – get rid of dancing. – We must no longer tolerate Jews, Christians, Buddhists, – or Hindus living among us. – We must have constant jihad, constant war. – And they would have this technique – for guaranteeing – total war, – that – is very familiar. – What they would do, – they you could call them Salafis, Wahabis. – We could we could call them radical Islam – today. – But this cult – of the Saudi family, the Wahab family, and – Shah Wali Uli Walla Ula of of India, – they would spend years and years – turning their villages and homes into fortresses. – They would put bombs and booby traps and – punji sticks and all this, – stuff. – And then they would go out – to peaceful neighbors – and they’d, – rape, pillage, you know, – torture, – commit all these unspeakable – atrocities. – And when the peaceful neighbors would retaliate and – come back, – they would be ambushed in these, houses and – villages, – that had been prepared by this. – Now, of course, many of their women and – children would be killed. – But for them, it was a good thing – because they would say, look. We are innocent – Muslims, and we are being attacked – by, you know, British and and Indians and – Hindus and Sikhs. – And they would rally the entire Muslim world – to defend them because they were victims. – And this was a technique that they perfected, – in, – India – and and, – Afghanistan, – and even in The Philippines. – They use these techniques against, Black Jack Pershing – and general Leonard Wood in The Philippines nineteen – o one. They made peace impossible – by creating conflict. – Right. They they would commit murders and ambushes – and and sabotage and all these things to – guarantee they would be attacked. – And then when they would be attacked, they’d – be prepared because they spent years waiting for – the attack. They’d inflict heavy casualties on the – enemy, and they’d be victims because you’re attacking – us in our own village. Insidious. This was – a technique that they used in 1818, – in, – in Iraq, in 1820, in Afghanistan, – in 1831, – in, Bengal in India, in Delhi in Cornpur – 1857. – All those, Errol Flynn movies with the Bengal – an Bengal answers, these were against these Wahhabis. – Devious – yet effective. – Absolutely. – So in fact and that explains the September – eleventh attack. – Why they attack in New York in September – 11? Because we would attack them in Afghanistan – after they had spent seventeen years – building the tunnels and the the defenses and – the booby traps and the ambushes. – And that’s exactly what they did to Israel, – from Gaza, commit the atrocity – after spending seventeen years building tunnels. So it’s – the same thing. So, – what happened to the Wahabis? – Well, it turned out that the Americans in – The Philippines – and the British in India and the Turks – completely, – destroyed them and discredited them. So for a – hundred years, this sect of Islam – was totally disgraced in the Islamic world, but – we didn’t wipe them out. They hid out – in the caves and tunnels of Afghanistan – for years and years, and they had their – teachings were taught in a school right outside – of Delhi, India, India called the, the Dioband – Seminary – Seminary. And any of your members of our – audience who are from India will know exactly – what I’m talking about. – In fact, students of this, – Wahhabi or radical college in India, – you know what the word for students of – that college was? What? Taliban. – Oh my gosh. So that’s how they kept – this radical doctrine alone. – So but but in any case, for years – and years, they were considered radical, – violent, – ignorant, – had no respect in the Arab world – until – 1930. – In 1930, – these, Wahab – radicals come out of their caves in Afghanistan, – and it’s a whole long story. They take – over Saudi Arabia, – and that Saudi, – that’s descended to that first Saudi, – king of the eighteen hundreds – is now ruling Saudi Arabia again. – But still, it’s it’s a backward – province, violent province, poverty province. Nobody pays any – attention to them – until – 1938. – In 1938, – you have a geologist – for the California – of California American Oil Company – finds – oil in Saudi Arabia. – Within ten years, – what used to be the backward, – despised, – violent, – sect of Islam – now has more money – than anyone else in the, – Islamic world. – They become richer than when the Islamic world – had slaves. Wow. And so the Wahhabi preachers – say Allah has chosen us – to again continue – the jihad – that we began, – back with Mohammed, – in in this fourteen hundred years ago. And – that’s exactly where we are today. – Now, of course, – it’s a it’s a little more complicated because – many of the Saudis, – you know, after they made all that oil – money, they don’t wanna do jihad anymore. – They wanna go skiing in Switzerland. They wanna – have their fancy house. They want the western – life. They want the western life. But the – Wahhabi said, you do that. – In fact, they the Wahabis made a deal, – they’ll say. They said to those, – Saudi royal family, – you could have your – vacations in Switzerland. You could go skiing. You – could live whatever lifestyle you want, but let – us run the schools – and let us have money so we could – promote our Wahhabi doctrine – around the world. And that’s how you had – that split personality – of Osama bin Laden – being raised in luxury, – but having been taught as a child that – the only true way of the world is – for Islam to take over the world. And – that’s what led us to September 11. – So, I I and now you see why – the story of Richard Summers, you see where – it leads to, and you see why the – story cannot be told in our, – schools, in our colleges, or in our mass – media, or in official productions. But if we – don’t learn those lessons, – I don’t see how we’re gonna survive if – we don’t start telling those stories again. Seth, – final minute. How consequential – a figure – is Richard Summers in American history? – He at one time, he was recognized as – a true national hero that every school child – knew. And you were talking, I would love – to see the Richard Sommer story on Netflix – Yeah. And everything we talked about. And it – would be just a good sequel – to the George Washington story or many of – the other things.
