On September 4, 1804, 26 year old Richard Somers and the whole crew of his ship ?Intrepid? were killed fighting America?s first ?War on Terror?.
For more than 300 years, the Barbary Kingdoms of North Africa attacked ships and coastal towns from Italy to Iceland and captured and sold more than a million Europeans as slaves.
By the 1700?s, England, France, and Spain bribed the Barbary Kingdoms with ?ransom? or ?tribute? to avoid attacks. But in 1798, Americans shouted ?Millions for defense?not one cent for tribute!?
